The Stripping of Nonmaterial Culture & Instutional Success in West Africa
The presence of Europeans in pre-colonial West Africa has significantly transformed the region, even shaping its contemporary landscape. This study explores the pre-colonial era of West Africa, analyzing the impact of European arrival and subsequent influence on the region. Specifically, it examines the transition from nonmaterial culture to material culture and its repercussions on political and economic institutions. The investigation begins by exploring the origins of the empire of Mali, providing insights into the emergence of pre-colonial empires and their socio-economic and political dynamics, influenced by traditional nonmaterial values. The study evaluates the European influence on nonmaterial culture and institutions in West Africa through a comprehensive analysis of traditional oral history, primary sources (including European, African, and Arabic sources), and participant observation. Additionally, compensatory discussions with West African citizens through surveys and interviews are conducted to solicit their perspectives and understand how European influence and the erosion of nonmaterial culture values and institutions continue to shape the contemporary period. Ultimately, the study concludes that European influence has had a detrimental impact on the nonmaterial culture and institutions. It highlights the ongoing repercussions of this influence on West African society, underscoring the importance of acknowledging and addressing these historical legacies in contemporary discourse and policymaking.
